Books, Playlists & Other Delights – September Edition

What I’m reading

I’ve been knee-deep in books about emotional intelligence, as I am designing a new course for University of Toronto called “The Emotionally Intelligent Leader.”

It’s been great to go deep by (re)reading some of the classics on the topic (like Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence), and some of the newer, more recent books, too. One of my new favourites is Amanda Blake’s Your Body is Your Brain. This is all about how to use your awareness of your body (AKA somatic awareness, or “embodiment”) to strengthen your social and emotional intelligence. I am excited to incorporate some powerful applied mind-body science into the course. These are such practical and useful tools to support learner’s leadership in the workplace and beyond.

Always fun to re-read books and also broaden pre-existing ideas with new concepts and approaches.

Designing courses and programs is one of my favourite activities, and I’, happy to be designing a program specifically geared towards supporting seasoned leaders to deepen their emotional intelligence.

What I’m listening to

This playlist with podcast episodes featuring the voices and stories of all the speakers who’ll be joining at the Visible Women’s Conference live this October - including me!

Each episode is a journey into the minds of trailblazing women who are shaping industries, breaking barriers, and redefining success on their own terms. Whether you’re seeking motivation for your personal growth or inspiration for your professional journey, these episodes offer something for everyone.

Excited to be heading to Montreal this October and to meet the other speakers in person. Until then I’ll be getting to know their stories through these episodes…

The conference host- and host of the Women in Visibililty Podcast, Bibigi Haile, has a knack for connecting deeply with all women she interviews and interacts with. She truly is a gem in the space of visibility and personal branding for women.

Have a listen and let me know what you think.

What I’m delighting in

My garden and especially all the late-bloomers, seeing as many of my flowers are fall bloomers. I planted my dahlia tubers a few weeks late and they’re finally emerging and worth the wait. I only became a gardener two years ago - before that I just had lawn. And so, I am revelling in the blooms that have emerged. (Or maybe one never stops being in awe of a garden, even after decades of experience. I’ll have to let you know.

All these dahlias came from my garden. The cream ones at the back at called Bronze Antique. The peach / yellow ones at the front are called Wine-Eyed Jill.

They take, on average, 90-100 days to blossom from the time of planting. A true exercise in patience! Though dahlias can last well into the fall, even as the Toronto temperature gets crisp. Seeing as I planted nine (!) dahlia tubers in my small yard, I’m looking forward to a flower-filled fall.
